  1. Read verses 1-7.  Describe the scene beside Bethesda and the invalid man’s struggles (1-5,7). What did Jesus ask him and what was his answer? (6,7) Think about importance of having strong desires to be healed (Mt 7:7,8; Lk 18:1).
  2. Read verses 8-14. How was he healed? (8,9a) What do you learn about the authority of Jesus’ word and importance of obedience? What does this sign mean to us? Why do you think Jesus healed him on the Sabbath? (9b-12,17; Mk 2:28) What did Jesus warn him and why? (13,14; 8:11)
  3. Read verses 15-30. Why did the Jews try to kill Jesus? (15-18) How did Jesus testify about his equality with God? (19-23,26-27,30) Therefore, what marvelous blessings shall those who hear his word receive? (24-30)
  4. Read verses 31-46. Who do witnesses to Jesus as God? (30-39) Yet, what is the Jews’ response? (40-47) What is their problem? (42) How can we obey Jesus’ word?
